How Well Do You Know Your New Neighbor?
Dominion is a large Virginia corporation that bought the highly-polluting Brayton Point coal-fired power plant in Somerset and the Salem Harbor coal and oil-fired power plant in a package deal in 2005. Since then, Dominion has been not only emitting thousands of tons of smog, soot and global warming pollution into our air, but also lobbying to win special treatment for their dirty old power plants.
At this point in time, we know that global warming has potentially disastrous effects in store for us, and we know that we are causing it by burning fossil fuels. For our current health and future safety, we are calling on Dominion to think globally, and clean up locally.
We are asking Dominion to please stick to producing electricity, instead of pressing for sweetheart pollution deals. A powerful company like Dominion should take the lead on global warming, instead of ignoring common sense steps like reporting on their climate emissions and how it can curb them, as requested by growing numbers of their own shareholders. We are asking Dominion to:
- support a cap on global warming emissions that will achieve 80% reductions by 2050 – the kind of deep reductions scientists say will protect us from the worst impacts of global warming
- make meaningful investments in clean technology; and
- significantly reduce global warming emission from its fleet of power plant
